Penn Cove capture 1970

In the waters off Washington State in the summer of 1970, hunters using speedboats and explosives herded more than 60 orcas from Puget Sound’s J, K and L pods into a three-acre net pen in Penn Cove off Whidbey Island. They lassoed adolescents ranging in age from 2 to 7 and separated them from their mothers. Local residents reported the air was thick with the sound of screaming whales thrashing in the tangled nets and fluke slaps which could be heard across the inlet. One mother orca drowned desperately trying to reach her infant through the twisted nets. Her body was later discovered by reporters.

SEND HER TO THE PITS!

WAUSAU, Wis. — A judge has ordered a trial for a Wisconsin woman accused of killing her boyfriend’s dog.

Twenty-year-old Sean Janas appeared in court Wednesday on charges of felony animal mistreatment and poisoning an animal, a misdemeanor.

Janas waived her right to a preliminary hearing. The judge then found there is enough evidence to send her to trial.

Prosecutors say Janas poisoned her boyfriend’s dog, a German shepherd-Labrador mix named Mary, and tortured the animal before the 4-year-old dog died in June.

WAOW-TV reports protesters gathered outside the courthouse. Many carried signs and brought their dogs to show support for Mary.

Janas’ public defender declined comment, saying the case is in the “very preliminary stages.”

Janas is scheduled to enter a plea in November. She remains in the Marathon County Jail.

Yes. Election politics is definitely in the air. It’s hard to miss it these days.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait until Wednesday when all the political ads will go silent for another two years. (At least I hope they do, otherwise, we will have entered a new level of hell.)

I think I am pretty well-versed on the political issues up for a vote in Minnesota on Tuesday, but recently I started to wonder what political issues might be pending that had to do with animals and…
